ChemoGirls Extensions Home Care

ChemoGirls hair extensions require extra TLC.

Please read and follow these instructions designed to help maximize the longevity and appearance of the extensions while promoting healthy natural hair growth.

Washing Your Hair

For normal to dry hair, try not to wash your hair every day, instead limit shampoo days to a few times per week. If your hair or scalp tend to be oily, then daily shampooing is fine.

Avoid vigorous rubbing when you shampoo. Wet hair completely, then apply shampoo at the top of the head and lather. Then apply shampoo at the base of the head and lather. This assures that you are cleaning both your hair and your entire scalp. Rinse and lather again, and this time leave on for three minutes then rinse. This second shampooing really helps to clarify the hair and scalp.

Follow with a conditioner, using the provided water bottle, by diluting 1 ounce of conditioner in water, shake well to dissolve and apply all over the head. This assures an even application from roots to tips. Gently comb through with a wide-tooth comb, holding the hair at the shaft and starting at the ends to de-tangle as you work your way up.

Regularly use a leave-in conditioner or serum to keep extensions hydrated. Apply Moroccan Oil and Moisture Cream Cocktail daily to the ends of your towel dried hair and brush gently, starting at the ends and working your way up. Hold hair at the mid-shaft by the bonds to ensure you’re not creating too much tension on the scalp.

Always use sulfate-free, gentle shampoos and conditioners.

Brushing

When brushing the hair, hold on to the hair near the scalp to avoid putting stress on your bonds. Start at the bottom and work your way to the top, going section by section to de-tangle. To brush near the scalp, use only the weight of the brush, do not press hard on the scalp.

Styling

Limit heat styling to damaging the hair and the bonds. If you do use heat, apply a thermal protectant and use lowest temperature.

Avoid hairstyles that pull on the hair, like tight ponytails or buns, to reduce strain on new growth. You can use a hair tie, but only the cloth covered scrunchie type. Never use elastic bands that can pull and tug on the hair and cause breakage.

Always use styling products that are alcohol-free to avoid drying out the hair.

Sleeping

To minimize friction, sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or wear a silk cap. This reduces tangling and breakage while you sleep. Do not go to bed with wet hair, it will absolutely tangle and cause breakage.

Swimming

If you go swimming, put hair in a low ponytail with a fabric covered hair tie. Braid the hair, and secure the ends with another hair tie. After swimming, remove the hair ties and braid before showering.

Maintenance and Move Up

Since post-chemotherapy hair can be fragile, we'll have you come back periodically to check your extension bonds and adjust as needed for hair growth and comfort. Plan to come back for your first maintenance around the 3 month mark. Your hair will be about an inch to an inch and a half longer so we will reposition your hair closer to your scalp.

Step 1 - We'll color your base and highlight if necessary.

Step 2 – We'll do a clarifying shampoo, condition the hair, dry thoroughly.

Step 3 - Using solution, we'll dissolve each bond and remove and inspect the hair, and snip off the tip where the original bond was. We'll add new adhesive and reattach the hair closer to the scalp. We'll repeat until the whole head is complete.

We'll repeat this process again in another 3 months. Eventually, you will need a new set of hair, as your natural hair will grow and your extensions will get shorter. If we need to add more hair to a maintenance appointment, you will be subject to a new hair charge, starting at $150.
